a tree grew here in durham

For months now, little w. has been captivated by this floating block of wood on 9th St. near the elementary school and the fire station.  At first, I couldn’t figure out what it was or how it got there on the telephone wire, but then I remembered the Day We Saw the Big Tree Being Cut Down and the puzzle pieces fell together.

We still like this floating wood disk mainly because it is our own private joke reminding us of what used to be.  The massive tree trunk left behind when a  tree is cut down is not a surprise; seeing the chunk of levitating wood shows that the tree crew was not only lazy but also had a sense of humor or just wanted to leave an unlikely monument.
